It’s almost a year since the British Standards Institution (BSI) looked at our environmental management system and determined it good enough to gain accreditation to ISO14001. One year on they have been back again to make sure we are still doing the right things and are making improvements.
Business Manager, Karen Butler said “It’s important for our business that we can have our environmental management system challenged and tested by a 3rd party of the stature of BSI. It keeps us focussed on doing the right things for the environment”
In the last year we reduced:
- the electricity consumption in the office by 22%,
- the amount of waste we send to landfill by 40% and
- increased the miles per gallon we get from our fleet of vehicles by 6%.
We are rather pleased and BSI think we are doing the right things and have made some good improvements.
Of course there is much more to do; we need to keep improving year on year. Targets for electricity, fuel and waste need to be set in the next few weeks. The photo voltaic panels that Norcroft Energy have just installed on the office roof will help cut our electricity use. Better management of vehicles will help us improve fuel consumption and working with our recycling partners should lead to more of our waste being reused and further reductions in landfill.
